DEBUT MUSIC VIDEO - ANGIE - "SHINE" . . .

And here it finally is!

As blogged about way back in June, here's the finished music video for a new artist called Angie . . .

This promo was another massive labour of love for me as a director  - and as a production designer, it was a purposefully massive contrast to my art direction overload in Velvet Code's "Get Outta My house" opus. Whilst that video was a chaotic celebration of all things gruesomely kitsch, this video's vibe was stylised fashion . . . Dreamy but dark.

And in keeping with the message of the song, the video is a stark, minimalist play of darkness and light.

The song is all about ending a destructive relationship, and stepping out into the light. I wanted to visually illustrate this through dance and my three amazing dancers became ciphers - lyrical manifestations of the song. They initially appear as stoic, moving statues, before my two fabulous lead dancers - Jade "Flossy" Sullivan and Leah Debrincat - become engaged in a haunting, modern ballet . . .

Their dance is all about the duality of Light and Dark - and it soon becomes a duel to the death . . . The dancers are almost elemental, and whilst each of their dance styles differs, their overarching dance sensibility is expressive, modern, experimental.  And they play out a purposefully epic and cinematic struggle - beautifully choreographed by Dare Cullen-Jones.

The location was the basement space of Victoria House in Bloomsbury Square, London. I love how the space looks like a huge, eerie gallery : black floors and white tiles combining in a seemingly endless arena of pillars and walls. I wanted to ramp up those associations, and have fun with their forms. And most importantly, I wanted the white space to be a blank canvas for my dancers.

We shot the promo through revolving, warped perspex and crystals, so all the rushes have a dreamy, almost underwater edge that I hope gives the video a look all of its own . . .

And I cannot thank my creative team enough for once again pulling out all the stops for me - from Charlie Herranz's camerawork to my ever-present glam squad of Nina Butkovich-Budden and Issidora.

And an enormous thank you has to go out to my three incredible dancers - who went along with my vision and in the process, battled against creepy contact lenses, body paint and wind machines - and never complained once! I love ya all!

The finished video is below . . .

STEPHEN T LALLY - COMMERCIAL SHOWREEL 2013 . . .

Et voila!

A perfect way to look back over the year's work with my latest Commercial Reel - video and blurb below. Stay tuned for my Creative Reel . . .

" With a keen and meticulous eye for beauty, Stephen Lally is an up and coming director with a passion for the fantastical, irreverent and mysterious.

An imaginative film-maker working in fashion, beauty and music, this is Stephen's 2012 Commercial Showreel, and a short montage of his commercial work to date - encompassing online and TV promos, idents, fashion films and ads.

He also moved into production design with Claire Oakley's award-winning short film 'Beautiful Enough'. In 2011 he further diversified into commercial beauty - directing promo films for Rimmel London and Special K. In 2012 he proved his ongoing versatility by conceiving and directing fashion films for Fault Magazine, Volt and Dazed & Confused magazine, as well as TV idents for Shockwaves and Vitabiotics, and a Christmas commercial for Dance Central 3 on XBox 360.

He looks forward to developing his striking and inventive visual style in every creative challenge and brief that befalls him . . .

'DANCE CENTRAL 3' - XBOX 360 COMMERCIAL . . .

Late last month, I directed my very first commercial - an ad for 'Dance Central 3' on Kinect for XBox 360 that debuted this weekend on UK TV . . .

From start to finish it was an amazing experience; I worked closely with the senior creative of The Outfit - Gemma Crawley - on a commercial we hoped would be as fun to watch as it was to make . . !

Starring the DJs and T4 presenters Matt Edmondson and Georgie Okell, it's my tongue in cheek homage to classic dance movie throwdowns - complete with slick flares, slow motion . . . And catsuits. Every epic dance off needs skintight lycra after all.

Once again, it was an absolute pleasure to work with the creative agency The Outfit - and the dream team of Edmondson and Okell were a joy to direct . . .

Such good sports! No matter what my choreographer Dare Cullen Jones or super stylist Ameena Kara Callender threw at 'em . . !

Now - just try and get our insanely catchy Usher track out of your head. Harder than it seems!
